Cedros – Alpamayo

Itinerary

Day One (Wiscash)-3,139 Meters Above Sea Level.

Usually we leave at 9 AM with a private car. On the way we pass by Carhuas, Yungay, Caraz, eventually arriving at Hualcayan where the mule drivers await us. Next we arrive at the coordinates where the expedition begins, but first we must pay 65 nuevo soles to enter the Parque Nacional Huascaran. Next the Guide explains how the expedition will be. Then we begin the walk, climbing in a zig zag that will take us about 4 or 5 hours, slowly but surely. Halfway up we observe a variety of flowers and plants. In front of us is the Cordillera Negra, with a splendid valley.

Day Two (Laguna Cullicoha)-4550 Meters.

We begin the walk at about 8 AM, climbing a moderate, somewhat difficult slope. On the way we see Lake Yanacocha from a distance and near by we see Lak Azulcocha. This day takes us about 5-6 hours. Continuing the walk we arrive at Lake Cullicocha, where we will camp by the lake, with an impressive view from which we can see the snowy peak of Santa Cruz Chico, 5,800 meters, and on the right we encounter Pucaraju, 6,241 meters.

Day Three (Osoruri)-4350 Meters.

It is the custom to begin walking after breakfast uphill, only for about 3 hours to the pass at 4,860 meters. From this point we take some photos and then we descend for about 1 hour to the campsite. From here we observe the Cedar Gorge and on our right a part of the snowy peak of Santa Cruz, 6,259 meters.

Day Four (Ruina Pampa)-4200 Meters.

After getting things ready as we do every day, we begin to climb uphill, which takes us about 2 hours. On the way we observe many pastures and wildflowers which beautify the landscape, such that the ascent is not too difficult. We reach the pass called Vientunan at 4,770 meters above sea level. From this point, we will observe the peak of Milluacocha, 5,480 meters. Afterward, we descend to the bottom where we will find 2 paths. One heads toward Quitaracsa and the other which we will take heads toward the Valley of the Ruins. It takes us about three hours and we camp in a very beautiful valley next to the Ruins.

Day Five (Jancarurish)-4,240 Meters Above Sea Level.

We begin the walk. Today is easy because everything is flat. We walk in a narrow valley full of pastures which takes us about 4 hours. After arriving in the valley we will climb a bit to visit Lake Jancarurish, which is about 2 hours uphill. From there we can see the nearby peaks such as Mount Tayapampa, 5,675 meters, Mount Jancarurish, 5,601 meters, Mount Alpamayo, 5,947 meters. Next we take photos of the mountains and then descend to the campsite.

Days Six (Mesapata)-4,400 Meters Above Sea Level

We begin the walk after breakfast at about 8 AM uphill in a very steep climb which will last until the pass at about 4-5 hours. On this route we will encounter a quantity of wildflowers. We then ascend to the pass called Gara Gara, 4,830 meters. From this point we observe mountains such as Jancarurish, 5,601 meters, Tayapampa, 5,775 meters, Alpamayo, 5,947 meters, etc. and on the right we observe Pilanco, at 5,300 meters. Then we descend for about two hours to arrive at the campsite.

Day Seven (Huillca)-4,270 Meters

We begin walking slightly uphill for about 1 and a half hours until we arrive at Mesapata, 4,460 meters. From here we can appreciate the peaks of Pucarashta, 5,450 meters, Rinrinjirca, 5,810 meters, Pucrapucraraju, 5,780 meters, West Pucajirca, 6,039 meters, etc. Below these mountains we can see various lakes such as Gaico, Pucacocha, Safuna, etc. Next we take photos and begin to descend into the valley. The walk takes about 4 hours until we arrive at the campsite by the river.

Day Eight (Sactaycocha)-4,056 Meters

We begin to walk uphill for about four hours at a moderate rhythm until we arrive at Yanacon Pass, 4,610 meters. From this point we observe a part of the peak of Mount Pucajirca North, 6,046 meters. Next we descend and on the way observe many bushes from Quenales, Quisuar, and others, an infinite variety of plants and flowers. This only takes about two hours to arrive at the campsite, which is at the side of Lake Sactaycocha.

Day Nine (Jancapampa)-4000msnm.

We begin the walk on a flat path for about 40 minutes. Then the rest is descent. This takes about four hours until the campsite and on the way we observe varieties of flowers and plants that beautify the nature. What’s more, we observe the peaks of Mount Pucajirca North, Pucajirca Central, 6,014 meters, and then we continue downward until we arrive at the campsite.

Day Ten (Pomabamba-Huraz)-3,100msnm.

We begin the walk after preparing all the equipment. The trail is easy, the route flat, for about two hours, then descent for about two hours until Pomabamba, which is a valley with easy access for a traveler. Once arrived at Pomabambe the car awaits us to take us back to Huaraz, which takes about 6-7 hours. Finally we take the visitors to their respective hostels.
